We’re less than one week away from kicking off Grand River Academy’s Summer Programs! From the Summer Academic Camp to the STEAM Academy, there’s a lot of activity going on as preparations are finalized.
One of the questions GRA has heard recently is who’s teaching the STEAM Academy? We’re excited to welcome Mr. Wyatt Bratt to the GRA family this summer as the STEAM Academy Director. We had the opportunity to talk with him about the program and his connections to the school.
What brings you to GRA?
My sister, Clare, and my brother-in-law Thomas (Polak), have been a part of GRA for several years now. Between summer family reunions and quick trips up to Austinburg, my family has always enjoyed GRA’s hospitality and we love getting to know the students (watching Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao in the common room; playing volleyball, basketball or just hanging out in the student center; and, of course, helping with the Grand River Gala).
All in all GRA has quite inadvertently (on my part) become a part of my life. More specifically, Thomas sort of nudged me to be part of the summer program. He and I have always connected on several levels, one of them being woodworking. One thing led to another, as they say, and now I am excited to bring what I can to the STEAM Academy.
What’s your background?
My background has always been hovering somewhere between art and building. I started out in good ol’ construction but I’ve always kept up on some sort of drawing discipline (cartooning, graffiti, sketching, perspective drawing, elevation and foot print and most recently 3D modelling and rendering). Utilizing technology while building with a variety of materials has taught me the appreciation of the connection between science, mathematics and the arts.
What are you looking forward to during the STEAM Academy?
I’m looking forward to the drone building and robotics weeks most but they will all be an exciting adventure! I think hands on projects are the best learning tool. We are visiting an aeronautical and science museum which will be really cool. Also, the sailboat we are building will be a new experience for the students!
Mr. Bratt will be living on campus this summer with his family. They like to spend a lot of time outdoors so if you see them walking around campus, make sure to stop by and say hello!
